Aimlessly Wandering the Information Superhighway!

The title just about sums up what I have been doing for the last three weeks since my last post, but more precisely describes what I did on Sunday!
I have a history list as long as your arm, and I have no clue about what I was doing!

But I have signed up for Gravatar, and have finally reported that bug with WordPress.

During the past month I have managed to do more work on the next version of Linux Links, I have most of the update working, and I’m just working on the Tag page. The next section I’ll be working on will be Search.

I am also working on the problem of how to make short unique URL’s similar to tinyurl.com
I’m thinking maybe put the md5 hash in a matrix table and add up every row and column, and then use that to make up some letters.
Yes, as you’ve probably guessed, I have no idea on how to go about it, and I don’t want to just use the id of the URL in the database

Other than that, nothing much has been happening, work is still the same, we’re starting to get in a lot of Easter eggs, which seem to magically disappear, must be due to the price! And there was me thinking that people would be boycotting Cadbury chocolate and not buying it!

Untill the next time
Enjoy your Easter Egg!

Edit: I have just been told that the price of Easter eggs in ASDA have gone back up to their original price.
I have also just installed the WordPress pluginWP_MonsterID, and have edited the blog theme, so if you are signed up to Gravator your avatar will show up, otherwise you get a random monster!

The Year Ahead

Ok I know that this is now a little late, I was originally going to post this on the 8th but never got around to it!

Right, I think its resolution time!

But first lets have a look at last years resolutions:

1. Again, finish any projects I start, and complete any that I have started

Well, I’ve started two or three this past year, and I have completed one, and one is ‘out’ but its still being worked on!

2. Update my website and blog more often

I’ve started to do that, the past three or four months I have been trying to post once a week.

Ok, now on to this years resolutions:

 1. Carry on updating website and blog more often
 2. Finish any projects I start, and complete any that I have started (third time lucky lol!)
 3. Update and improve Linux Links
 4. Try and get Linux Links on the first page of a Google search

Now lets see which of these ones I can break this year!

Thats its for this post
Till next time
Happy New Year

New Year, New Style!

Its the new year, and what a time to update my websites style!
A new year, a new style!
What do you think? Comments are welcome!

There may be a few issues, especially in browsers other than Firefox on Linux.
So if your using Internet Explorer, Opera or any other web browser on Windows, or Mac and you spot a problem let me know about them so I can sort it out. Thanks!

I don’t have any time to post any more as I should be on my way to my girlfriends by now, so I’ll post more details as soon as I can.

Until then,
Happy New Year!

Euromillones Loteria International

On the 28th of December my girlfriend received a letter from the Euromillones Loteria International
Below is a copy of the letter sent

How do I know this is a scam?

 • Firstly the letter is not directly addressed to my girlfriend, and she has never entered any lottery.
 • Secondly all of the logos on the letter have been scanned into the computer.
 • Thirdly the letter heading, is that word art with a drop shadow? On an official letter?
 • Fourthly, why would the winning participant have to give 10% of their winnings to Global Fortune Security S.A.?
 • Fifthly, don’t even get me started on the “claim form”!

I’m not sure what to do with this now, do I send the “claim form” back with fake details, or just tick the box asking to be paid by a certified cheque?

The letter asks for the “award” to be kept away from public notice until the claim has been processed and the money “remitted to your nominated account”

So what better place to announce that my girlfriend has won €615,810 (six hundred and fifteen thousand eight hundred and ten euros only) shared among seventeen (17) international winners with 10% taken off, than my blog!

That’s €32,601.71 (thirty two thousand six hundred and one euros and seventy one cents) or £23,940.91 (twenty three thousand nine hundred and forty pounds and ninety one pence)

WooHoo! We’re in the money! Lol!

Until the next scam,
Stay safe!

Update! One of the commenter’s, Nick, has set up a Facebook group, if you would like to join its called I’ve received a letter from Euromillones Loteria International.

Fix for wordpress breaking mod_rewrite/friendly URLs

If you’ve just upgraded WordPress and find that when you browse your blog your web browser displays the following message

“the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”

To fix this all you need to do is edit one file in the WordPress installation.

The problem is due to the canonical redirection functionality, it redirects incorrect permalinks to their correct ones.

To disable that functionality edit /wp-includes/canonical.php and comment out the last line:
add_action(‘template_redirect’, ‘redirect_canonical’);
change to:
//add_action(‘template_redirect’, ‘redirect_canonical’);
Here’s the post on the WordPress support forum that details the problem and solution

This post was at first intended as a note to myself, so that in the future when i update WordPress and find my blog does an infinite loop then I can quickly change it.
I then decided to keep the post open, so that others with the same problem can quickly search and fix it!

I’ve just got over a cold or the flu!

I woke up Friday morning afternoon at about 12:30, and I had a slight headache!

I made myself some eggybread for breakfast lunch
I then went back to sleep for another half an hour and woke up still with my headache.

I went out shopping with my girlfriend to asda and then the mall, and I just couldn’t stop shaking

I had an early night that night, honest, well nearly midnight is early! Lol!

I woke up this morning with a slight headache, but i wasn’t as bad as last nights, and I’ve had this headache all day now!

I’ve been on my computer all day, but I haven’t managed to make any of my planned updates to my website!
But I have added the SRG Clean Archives plugin to my blog.
I’m just going to post this entry and make sure that the changes I made to the plugin work before I let it loose!

Till next time
Stay well!

Edit: It works!

The night after the night before!

This is the first night/day after the last day of working nights

We finished working at 6am, and went to bed as soon as I got home. Woke up about 2pm, and I was feeling tired all day.
I was also feeling tired all evening, but for the past hour or two I’ve felt wide awake!

I’ve done a little bit of work on my website and blog, and have added a few touches to my Linux site, I’m now going to try and get some sleep tonight!

I’ll post again sometime this weekend!
Till then

Good night!

15 Minutes before bedtime!

I’ve been working on my website all day, and I have managed to almost finish three out of my list of seven things to work on my website.

If any of you were lucky enough to be visiting my website more than five minutes ago then you would of seen “(new)” at the end of the title of every web page. That is because I have replaced the PHP classes I have used to create the site layout with three simple includes. There is only one part left to go and that is the blog, but thats next!

The next two changes are on the homepage.
One, I have got rid of the “Whats New” section.
And two, I have replaced my RSSread PHP program with some PHP to include the latest blog entries straight from the database!

I’ll post more details about changes as and when I complete them!
Till next time, see you!

Five minutes left till bedtime now, and the subscriptions plugin is working, but it sends an email even if I edit a post!

Getting ready for nights!

From Sunday I will be working from 9pm to 9am for the next four days. This is to help with the refit that is going on at the moment.

It is 5 o’clock in the morning and I’ve been up for and hour now! I’m going to be going back to sleep, if thats possible, at 4pm and then waking up again at 10pm so that I can then hopefully stay awake all night!

I will be taking this free time as a chance to update my website as I have a list of tweaks and fixes to do.
One of them is a subscription to this blog so that casual visitors and readers can receive emails when I finally write a new post!

I have already added the plugin, subscribe2, to wordpress, and now I’m just testing it out with this post!

I’ll post again tomorrow night.
Until then, stay awake!

I didn’t decide to stay on holiday!

I should start this with a link to my holiday photos on flickr.
I know that its been over a month since i got back off holiday, and i haven’t posted anything on my blog!
But I’m going to now!

I was going to start this post with details of our holiday, but I’ll now leave that for another post!

What has caused the long delay on posting? I don’t know really, but I think its time!
Ive been busy at work, and when I’m not at work I’m with my girlfriend, and I just don’t seem to have the time left to do anything else!
But I have managed to build myself a second computer! I am going to be using as a file-cum-web-cum-print-server.

A couple of years ago I brought a Via EPIA Mini-ITX motherboard from www.mini-itx.com which I was intending to put inside my old radio alarm clock.
I did put it inside the radio alarm clock, but I never got around to actually installing an operating system onto it, and ever using it, so its been sat on my desk gathering dust.

I’ve been wanting to change my main computer for something a little faster, and I thought now would be a good time to do something with the little computer!
So I brought a case, installed Fedora 7 onto it, and now I’m just trying to get file sharing going between it and an aging Intel Celeron (333MHz) via wireless, and two other relatively old computers (both AMD’s, a K6 500MHz and an Athlon 850MHz)

I’ve just brought 1Gb of memory for it, as when I initially got i, I only brought 256Mb for it!

I’ve already got the web server running, and webmin, now I just need to install the printer, and its practically done!

I’m typing this post up using the new computer!

I’ll post more details soon!
Until next time!
Bye!

Edit: I’ve fixed the type of my Mini-ITX motherboard to a VIA EPIA series motherboard, and I have updated the link to point to the correct url (http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=21)
